N-acetyl-cysteine, known as NAC, is a derivative of an amino acid, L-cysteine. Cysteine stimulates protein production and is involved in the manufacturing processes of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, and taurine. Certain factors can make our production of L-cysteine insufficient to meet our glutathione needs.
One of its forms, reduced glutathione, known as GSH, is composed of three amino acids: glutamic acid, glycine, and cysteine, the latter being what gives it its exceptional antioxidant properties.
Indeed, glutathione is the body's major antioxidant. Produced directly at the heart of our cells, it plays an essential protective role against free radicals and their harmful effects on our cells: it protects against aging and cellular deterioration as well as inflammation, notably in the intestines, and it contributes to the detoxification of our body and the restoration of our cells.
Certain diseases cause a decrease in glutathione production, which otherwise declines in all individuals with age.
Antioxidants mainly play a role in combating inflammatory and oxidative processes caused by free radicals and oxidative stress. The latter is directly linked to our lifestyle, stress levels, diet (the development of an industrial pro-inflammatory diet deficient in micronutrients), addictions (alcohol, cigarettes, etc.), and exposure to environmental chemical substances.
Our diet, which does not provide us with enough substances to manufacture L-cysteine, and stress, which depletes our reserves, are the main sources of glutathione deficiencies. Furthermore, as with other elements produced by our body such as collagen, for example, our production decreases drastically with age, making supplementation necessary.
The acetylcysteine molecule has been known for years by the scientific community and has been listed on the "WHO Model List of Essential Medicines" since 1999 as a mucolytic agent (mucus thinner) to clear the respiratory tract and as a detoxifier in case of paracetamol overdose (protecting the liver from damage):

This molecule is now widely present in several pharmaceutical treatments in various forms. It also generates scientific interest in several research fields, notably respiratory, hepatic, ophthalmological, psychiatric, and cardiovascular. It continues to interest researchers in very diverse fields of health. Very recently, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been the subject of very promising work in several areas of digestive physiology. Available studies are exploring in particular its potential role in antioxidant defense mechanisms, the intestinal barrier, and microbiome balance.

The "HPMC plant capsule" is only plant-based in name! Behind a marketing facade, the HPMC plant capsule actually contains chemical residue. To always offer you the highest quality products possible, DJFORM uses pullulan capsules, which are suitable for vegetarian, and vegan diets. Instead of wood cellulose, which is indigestible for plant capsules of the HPMC type, pullulan capsules are food products derived from sugar cane that our body is able to digest.
Our cells are true little energy power plants. Cellular metabolism, thanks to the mechanism of oxidation-reduction, involves the transfer of electrons between the oxygen molecules we breathe and the glucose molecules or certain fatty acids from our food (respectively carbohydrates and lipids). By capturing pairs of electrons from them, oxygen enables the transformation of these nutrients into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), cellular fuel, in other words, the energy necessary for the normal functioning of our body.
Any energy production cannot be 100% optimal and inevitably produces waste. Indeed, during cellular oxidation-reduction processes, a percentage of these exchanges do not occur properly, and a certain number of oxygen molecules end up with an odd number of electrons. These reactive and unstable oxygen derivatives are called free radicals. Thus, the oxygen necessary for our body's life can also become its enemy and accelerate its wear and tear.
As any unstable element seeks to balance itself, free radicals draw the missing electron from their environment. They then destabilize the cells, blood cells, proteins, or even microbes they encounter. Admittedly, this natural process is advantageous for our immune defenses, but an excess of free radicals causes chain disruptions that directly affect our health.
Produced in small quantities, free radicals are well managed by our body thanks to the production of antioxidants. The antioxidants present in our body, mostly coming from an appropriate diet rich in fruits and vegetables, are molecules that neutralize free radicals and allow a balance between the two. In this case, they are beneficial for our health: they ensure the cleansing of our body by eliminating old or defective cells. They also intervene in the anti-bacterial, microbial, and viral fight and participate in proper immune functioning.
However, our modern lifestyles are the cause of an excess production of free radicals, under the effect of numerous factors:
Produced in too large quantities, free radicals cause what is called oxidative stress. Our cells (including the DNA present within them) oxidize, deteriorate, and die. If our body does not have enough antioxidants acting as shields against free radicals, oxidative stress leads to the premature aging of our cells and increases health risks. Antioxidants, capable of reducing the oxidation process of our cells by free radicals, are essential to protect us from oxidative stress and its devastating effects on the health of our cells, organs, and skin.
