Betaine HCl (marine gelatin) image

Betaine HCl, your digestive ally.

Betaine hydrochloride is traditionally derived from beetroot and used for its digestive benefits.

During digestion, we produce hydrochloric acid (HCl), which aids proper digestion by acidifying gastric juice and activating enzymes that help break down food optimally. When our body does not produce enough hydrochloric acid, digestion becomes less efficient and slower.

Symptoms of digestive discomfort such as bloating, flatulence, belching, and heartburn may then occur.

A deficiency in gastric acidity can indeed lead to various digestive and metabolic disorders:

  • Poor protein digestion: Hydrochloric acid is essential for activating pepsin, the enzyme responsible for breaking down proteins into amino acids.
  • Nutritional deficiencies: HCl facilitates the absorption of several essential nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.
  • Risk of bacterial overgrowth: Since gastric acidity limits the growth of bacteria in the small intestine, a lack of HCl can promote an imbalance in the microbiota and digestive infections.
  • Acid reflux: Paradoxically, gastric reflux can be linked to a lack of acidity, leading to poor closure of the lower esophageal sphincter and acid regurgitation.

HCl production naturally decreases with age, explaining the frequent digestive issues in seniors, but it can also be linked to other factors:

  • Chronic stress, which reduces gastric acid production and disrupts digestion;
  • An unbalanced diet, particularly excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods and refined sugars, which can impair hydrochloric acid production;
  • Taking medications such as PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) and long-term antacids, which can cause secondary hypochlorhydria.

Extensive research focuses on the virtues of betaine HCl in regulating gastric pH, supporting the production of digestive enzymes that allow for proper protein breakdown, and optimizing nutrient absorption, making it an ally for restoring gastric acidity to improve digestion, particularly in people suffering from hypochlorhydria.

Note that betaine HCl can indirectly help with fat digestion by stimulating bile secretion (which allows for fat digestion) via gastric acidity, making it a very interesting dietary supplement to support the transition to a healthy diet focused on reducing or even eliminating carbohydrates (low carb or ketogenic).

Betaine HCl courses: for whom? For what?

We recommend a course of betaine HCl to support gastric acidity, aid digestion, and reduce digestive discomfort.

These courses should be short-term until balance is restored; they can be taken as a preventative measure before a large meal or during busy periods like the holiday season, or they can be taken in case of acid reflux to improve symptoms.

We recommend this product for:

  • People who have difficulty digesting and experience frequent digestive problems;
  • People over 50 whose gastric acidity naturally decreases;
  • People suffering from acid reflux due to a lack of gastric acidity;
  • Those transitioning to a healthy, low-carb, higher-protein and fat diet, such as low-carb or ketogenic diets, to facilitate digestion and protein assimilation during the adaptation period;
  • Athletes with a high-protein diet for digestive support.

However, this product is not suitable for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
